There are three bridges thrown over the Canal Grande: the Scalzi bridge, the Accademia bridge and the Rialto bridge - the oldest and most famous one.
We have taken the vaporetto just where the new bridge is now beeing constructed - at the Piazzale Roma.
The fourth one is under construction (beeing assembled) at the moment - it still does not have a name, but inhabitants have already nicknamed it Calatrava (named after the Spanish author and architect Calatrava).

The Scalzi Bridge is probably named after the Church degli Scalzi. The church was built on demand of Carmelitani friars (scalzi means in Italian barefoot).
The real name of the church is Santa Maria di Nazareth. It was built between 1660 and 1689 and consecrated only in 1705. The facade is said to be close to the Roman baroque. The ceiling is frescoed in 1744 by Tiepolo, but was damaged in 1915 during the Austrian bombings. The drafts are kept in the picture-gallery Gallerie dell' Accademia.
