Red, the color of red bricks and flowers. Brick is the primary component in the landscape of Delft. This may refer to the whole Netherlands.
The most significant of his works are now in the museums of Amsterdam and The Hague. Of all his paintings depict mostly people in the interior, only two of them are landscapes. Both are views of Delft.
Peter Weil, in his book "Genius Loci", has even named "Portrait of Brick" his essay about the Dutch painter Peter de Hoock, who worked in Delft at the same time as Vermeer.
Weil referres in his "Portrait of Brick" to Amsterdam. I won't compare Delft with Amsterdam, but it seemed to me especially "bricked". Perhaps due to the fact of beeing a small town, and therefore the "concentration of bricks" is here higher?
My tendency comes from the admiration of my favorite painter Jan Vermeer von Delft (1632-1675), who lived and worked in Delft during all his life.
The most significant of his works are now in the museums of Amsterdam and The Hague. Of all his paintings depict mostly people in the interior, only two of them are landscapes. Both are views of Delft.
I wanted to see and photograph these views of Delft, which Vermeer painted at his time.
