Phocaea City - Marseille, France | forward > |
"On the 24th of February, 1815, the look-out at Notre-Dame de la Garde signalled the three-master, the Pharaon from Smyrna, Trieste, and Naples."
So begins my favorite novel by Dumas "The Count of Monte Cristo" and so begins for me city of Marseille.
Unfortunately, I did not know about Marseille anything except that you can deduct from the novel. As we were here for one day in September 2009, I learned about the city some other interesting things.
For example, the fact that Marseille was founded by Phocaeans about 600 BC.
And in the Old Port they have put a commemorative plate for this event. I imagine that the Phocaeans (Greek sailors from the Phocaea city in Asia Minor) actually landed right on this spot where I stood.
And the first thing we did was to sit at a table in the taverna in the Old Port.
I believe that the Phocaeans also liked at their time to sit in such taverns and to drink wine that was stored in these barrels.
