We visited Barcelona first in 1998.

La Rambla

During our holiday in France, by Perpignan, we did a day trip to Barcelona. There we have found out that these brief 5 hours which were left to us for the walk through the town are not really sufficient. Therefore this time (September 2007) we have booked a hotel closer to the town and have carried out several excursions to Barcelona.

La Rambla Street is the usual starting point of a walking tour in Barcelona. In the middle of the street there is a wide pedestrian area with two small roadways on the sides. Rambla means "riverbed". Once, here was a river running along the town wall.

A Building in Barcelona

If you leave yourself enough time for the Rambla, you'll probably need a whole day for it, because in the street a hot spot itself and the city guide lures on every crossroad of the Rambla to deviate: sometimes to the Placa Reial, sometimes to the famous covered market La Boqueria, sometimes to the Barri Gotic (the Gothic quarter).

A residential building on the Rambla looks like a fairy tale palace. To be honest I don't remember whether it is situated on the Rambla or in the neighbouring streets.

In Barcelona there are many nice buildings. And this is not including Gaudis works, about which we'll speak separately.
In 1999 city of Barcelona won the Royal Gold Medal for architecture. This was the first time that not an architect got it but a town as a whole.
